Today, First Lady Melania Trump celebrated the anniversary of her #BeBest initiative, the hilariously hypocritical effort she launched with the self-professed goal of combatting cyber-bullying. Either the ironic fact that she is currently married to a United States president who regularly harasses and mocks his opponents on Twitter while spamming out nonsensical conspiracy theories is either completely lost on her, or she’s just a big a troll as her husband.
Frankly, it’s surprising on some level that Melania has stuck around, since all signs seem to indicate that their marriage is cold and joyless, in sharp contrast to the loving, healthy relationship between President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle. Melania is living with a monster, and her sporadic public repudiations of Trump show that she’s aware of that fact.
Now, we’ve been treated another such incident. Right after she announced Trump’s name at today’s event, the audience broke into an enthusiastic, sycophantic round of applause.

Rather than waiting for it to die down naturally, Melania bulldozed over the clapping, immediately asking everyone to sit down. The sudden terse direction seems to have been specifically to stop the applause. Given Trump’s well-documented egomaniacal love of adulation, the First Lady ruining his fun appeared to be an intentional sign of disrespect.
One can only imagine the conversation they had after the event, but it’s not too much a stretch of the imagination to presume that the president lost his cool in private. If there’s one thing he hates above all else, it’s someone else stealing attention away from him. While Melania is certainly not a good guy in this saga and she will be remembered for her complicity with this disastrous administration, we can stake some small joy in her taking the air out of her husband’s sails, even if for just a moment.
