Donald Trump has been President of the United States for more than two years, and the small, pathetic man still can’t shake his obsession with Barack Obama, so stuck is he in the superior man’s shadow. His agenda so far has been to attempt every action he can think of to undermine his predecessor’s legacy, with mixed success. Trump has no real vision for this country beyond erasing our first black president.
This morning, the president woke up and once again decided to simultaneously whine about and smear Obama on Twitter. Trump accused him of failing to take proper action against Russian interference in advance of the 2016 election. “He did NOTHING, and had no intention of doing anything!” Trump wrote. The claims are both untrue and deeply hypocritical.
While then-candidate Trump was all too happy to receive Russian assistance and capitalize on their interference, under the Obama administration, U.S. intelligence officials warned the Russians against attempting interference, with Obama himself telling Vladimir Putin directly to desist in his efforts. Clearly, this approach fell well short, but to say they tried nothing is deeply dishonest.

More egregiously, it appears Republicans actively blocked attempts to respond to Russian interference. Former Vice President Joe Biden has stated that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refused to join forces in a bipartisan condemnation, which in turn prompted Biden and Obama not to speak out publicly for fear of making it look like Democrats were seeking to delegitimize the election.
It’s perfectly in keeping with McConnell’s cravenly and unpatriotic record to choose his party over the country, seeing as he serves the interests of the plutocrats of the superwealthy GOP donor base over the American people, but Republicans cannot be permitted to get away with lying about what happened. They are the ones who weakened our democracy by refusing to stand united against Putin, and they must be held accountable for it.
But the substance of Trump’s latest assault on his predecessor is hardly the point as he works to distract from the light being shed on his own rampant corruption and crimes.
It’s certainly not a coincidence that Trump is frantically trying to shift blame to President Obama as Trump’s handpicked Attorney General William Barr testifies about the Mueller report. Barr has been accused of shielding Trump from obstruction charges and misrepresenting the thrust of Mueller’s finding. Calls for the AG’s impeachment are starting to grow, and the president is clearly worried.
Why didn’t President Obama do something about Russia in September (before November Election) when told by the FBI? He did NOTHING, and had no intention of doing anything!
