Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) came out swinging against President Trump today with some of his boldest and harshest criticism of the current corrupt administration to date. The comments were in response to Trump’s tweets yesterday, in which he slanderously accused the New York Attorney General’s office as well as Cuomo himself of breaking the law by investigating the National Rifle Association.

Cuomo appeared on CNN and dismissed Trump’s accusation by breaking down the simple facts that the New York AG has jurisdiction to probe the NRA and that the investigation is proceeding completely within the bounds of the law. He dismissed Trump’s claim of political motivation as “garbage” and something that isn’t done in New York.

“The attorney general is independently elected, and she is elected in this state to enforce the law. The NRA is originally chartered in this state. It’s a not-for-profit organization. So she has jurisdiction and she believes there may have been illegal activity. So she is pursuing that case. The president’s accusation that it’s politically motivated is all garbage. We don’t do that in New York state,” said Cuomo.

The governor took it a step further, accusing the president of projecting his own methods onto those of the NY AG, but just because Trump is comfortable abusing the Justice Department to further his own partisan goals, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is.

Cuomo then broke down the NRA’s undue influence over the GOP, pointing out how powerful the blood-soaked gun lobby has become and how Trump himself is afraid of alienating the organization out of a fear of how they could affect this reelection prospects.

“The president of the United States, for all his bluster, is afraid of the NRA. It is that simple. We know it’s that simple. The NRA has been a strong political force for many, many years. They’re threatening. They have money. They mobilize people,” said Cuomo.

The governor should be commended for standing up to Trump and the NRA. The Republicans continue to allow a wave of gun violence to sweep this nation, refusing to take action as bodies pile up. They’re crippled by their fear of the lobby, and Americans are paying the price. They must be shamed into action.
