Former Vice President Joe Biden officially announced today that he is running for president in 2020, immediately surging to become the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination by many estimates. In the unveiling of his campaign, he focused on the existential struggle that the coming election poses for our country.

“We are in the battle for the soul of this nation. If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation — who we are. And I cannot stand by and watch that happen,” Biden said.
In a video posted to Twitter and Youtube, he laid out his vision for an America that strives to live up to the ideals laid out at its Founding.

Trump, who has mocked Biden on Twitter over the past couple weeks as rumors of his pending campaign announcement swirled, didn’t take long to respond to today’s big news.
The president tweeted about Biden, tagging him with the nickname “Sleepy Joe” for some reason. The president is infamous for inventing insulting monikers for his political opponents, but this one is a little puzzling. The former Obama VP doesn’t have a reputation for falling asleep or being abnormally tired, and the jab is especially hypocritical when one considers that the man serving it up wastes much of his time in his bedroom watching Fox News.

Trump then demeaned Biden by saying that he hopes he has the “intelligence” to wage a successful primary campaign since said intelligence has been “long in doubt.” Again, the attack doesn’t really track.

Biden doesn’t have a reputation for being stupid, unlike Trump, who is widely known to be a deeply ignorant man who never reads, not even his presidential briefings, and who clearly has no idea what he’s talking about when he gives his speeches. Really, Trump’s intelligence can’t even be said to be “long in doubt” as that would be far too generous. We know he lacks any kind of real intellectual abilities beyond a base animal cunning.

Trump went on to add that the primary is going to be “nasty” and then smeared the entire Democratic field by saying those running against Biden have some “very sick & demented ideas,” as if progressives calling for all Americans to have affordable healthcare and demanding that the Trump administration stop locking children in cages is somehow an evil agenda.
Clearly, the crook in the Oval Office is worried about Biden, and is struggling to figure out how he can beat a veteran of an actually competent and successful presidential administration should the former VP succeed in nabbing the Democratic nomination. Expect many more attacks to follow.

Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe. I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty – you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!
