Robert De Niro just torched Trump’s Republican bootlickers in epic beat down

The deeply held antipathy toward President Trump by Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro is well documented, and Trump’s feelings about the noted thespian are undoubtedly mutual, especially since DeNiro has taken to portraying the president’s nemesis Special Counsel Robert Mueller on occasional Saturday Night Live sketches.

De Niro has now expanded his harsh criticism from Trump himself to his feckless enablers in the Republican party with a stern warning towards the GOP during a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter.

Addressing the Republicans’ failure to provide a check against Trump’s worst excesses during his term to date, he reminded GOP leaders that voters would remember “all the things that these Republicans did during the time of Trump” for a long time to come.

Asked about the current controversy over the failure of Attorney General William Barr to release anything but a four-page summary of the Mueller report, De Niro argued that the summary was part of a charade by Barr to protect the president.

“It’s pathetic,” De Niro answered. “You know what’s interesting is that Democrats are trying to do the right thing and say, ‘We’re waiting for justice to come,’ and then it doesn’t come. Or it will come in a way, Mueller presented it in a way that’s up to us and Congress to make, come up with the results, but now it’s being barred by Barr. And that’s to be seen now what Congress will do and how effective they’re going to be.”

“But I think there’s going to be a lot of mass demonstrations, a lot of protests if this is not resolved. We have to know what went on. We have to know. The handwriting’s on the wall,” the 75-year-old actor continued.

Being old enough to have lived through Watergate has led the acclaimed actor to be astonished at the level to which the Republican party has fallen to with its embrace of the evils of Trumpism.

“I don’t know what’s happened in this country with the Republicans,” De Niro wondered aloud. “I mean the Republicans with Nixon didn’t do this, but these Republicans are. And we’re not going to forget about them,” He continued.

“Because when, later on in years to come, long after Trump is gone, there are going to be writers, as soon as any of these characters come out, emerge in some way, they’re going to remind us of all the things that these Republicans did during the time of Trump,” the activist actor warned.

De Niro’s strongly held political beliefs are what motivated him to take on the role of the Special Counsel when called upon by Saturday Night Live’s creator Lorne Michaels.

“I consider it my civic duty to do that part — just to be there because [Mueller] doesn’t say much, but he doesn’t have to. It’s that simple,” De Niro explained. “I might even be happier the day that Mueller puts him in handcuffs, takes him in an orange jumpsuit and puts him away for a long time.”

On that day — one that by all rights should be immediately declared a national holiday — De Niro can be proud of whatever small role he played in helping bring about that joyous occasion.
