The FBI just opened a new investigation into Mar-a-Lago

Yesterday, in the latest example of ways in which the Trump administration is staggeringly negligent when it comes to national security, it was revealed that a criminal complaint has been filed with the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Florida after a Chinese citizen was arrested over the weekend trying to enter Mar-a-Lago to spy.

The individual in question, Yujing Zhang, was caught by Secret Service and discovered to be smuggling cyber-spying equipment on the premises, including a laptop, external hard drive, and a USB drive carrying “malicious malware.”

Given the fact that Trump and his associates are known for their incredibly lax approach to cybersecurity, it’s not surprising that Mar-a-Lago — a cesspit of corrupt hobnobbing between administration officials, foreign agents, and plutocratic business interests — would be a target for Chinese spies.

Now, Democrats are once again proving themselves to be the only party that legitimately cares about national security. The Associated Press reports that Democrats have demanded that the FBI investigate the security situation at Mar-a-Lago, which the Trump administration refers to nauseatingly as the “Winter White Huse.” Dems want to discern whether or not the classified information in Mar-a-Lago is at risk of being breached by foreign operatives.

Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee explained:

“We want to make sure that the Secret Service is being the very best that they can be, and we want to find out more about exactly what kind of security they had down there in Florida. I think it’s very, very, very, very important that the president be protected. And I feel very strongly about that.”

In addition to the House Oversight Committee, Senate Democrats also asked the FBI to investigate Mar-a-Lago. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reached out to FBI Director Christopher Wray with concerns about the Chinese spy stating that it, “raises very serious questions regarding security vulnerabilities at Mar-a-Lago, which foreign intelligence services have reportedly targeted.”

According to CNN, the FBI has now opened an official investigation into the security situation at Mar-A-Lago.

With Democrats in the House and Senate on board with this issue and the FBI involved, it seems likely that any security weaknesses will be uncovered. Whether or not Trump — who clearly cares little about keeping the country safe — will actually do anything to fix the problem is another issue entirely.
