The Special Olympics Chairman just torched Betsy DeVos’ cruel funding cuts

Yesterday, Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos shocked every American of good conscience by announcing that her proposed departmental budget will cut all of its $18 million in funding to the Special Olympics. In a pathetic attempt to defend her indefensible decision she claimed that the Department of Education has been forced to make “difficult decisions” in order to cut spending and that she intends to cut the education budget by 12% overall.

The obvious and disgusting hypocrisy is that this is the same administration that was able to find money to give massive tax breaks to the rich, possibly adding $1 trillion to the deficit over the next ten years. Republicans are all too happy to give piles of cash to the top 1% so that they can purchase another round of mansions and yachts, but apparently can’t find it in their heart to spend any money on athletes with disabilities. The GOP has become cartoonishly evil under Trump and just keeps getting worse.

Now, the Chairman of the Special Olympics Timothy Shriver has responded to DeVos’s despicable agenda in no uncertain terms. He defended federal funding of the Special Olympics and correctly pointed out that many Americans want a more inclusive society and care about people with disabilities.

“The federal government, if it believes in full inclusion and it does, our Constitution, our Declaration and our laws tell us we do and if the federal government has a role to support that, it ought to be investing in kids with special needs,” said Shriver on MSNBC.

Shriver gave an impassioned defense not only of the Special Olympics but of a broader American culture of inclusion and acceptance, sketching out a picture and future for this nation that stands in stark opposition to the one Trump and his cronies like DeVos are actively working towards. Americans need to side with good men like Shriver and eject the goons currently in control of our government to the curb.

We must stand up for all Americans, regardless of disability.
