Donald Trump’s unbridled love of fast food is well-documented and — if some reports are to be believed — actually stems from his belief that he’s less likely to be poisoned if he sticks to such premade meals. On top of that, the manner in which he touts his McDonalds habit is a clear effort to shore up his populist reputation, a hamfisted attempt to make himself seem like just another regular guy rather than the corrupt oligarch he really is.
Today, the president’s fast food obsession surged to the forefront once again. The Hill reports that Trump hosted the North Dakota State University Bison football team at the White House to celebrate its recent title in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA.
Just like when he hosted the Clemson Tigers in January, the president decided against wheeling out one of the gourmet meals that the White House chefs are known for, and instead gave them a massive spread of fast food. Trump even acknowledged the fact that he could have had a meal prepared by the chefs for the players but decided against it because he said: “I know you people.”

Photos of the mountains of McDonalds Big Macs and Chick-fil-A quickly went viral on Twitter, as they did last time. And once again, Twitter users swarmed the president over his strange culinary choice.
While it’s a small, relatively innocuous stunt in the scheme of things, it’s another reminder of how bizarre our politics have become under Trump. Under any other president, a fast food smorgasbord being used to “honor” White House visitors would have been rightfully recognized as supremely strange. Under Trump, it barely registers.
Put simply, the White House has lost much of its dignity under this administration and hopefully, the next Democrat to ascend to the Oval Office can bring back some of what’s been lost.

What the heck, Trump? The shutdown is over. You have chefs that can make GOOD meals for these guys.

If a black president served fast food at the White House, Fox News would say he’s “ghetto.” When Trump does it, even without a government shutdown this time, they’ll say he’s relatable. pic.twitter.com/37zWIYokZk

Look, he can serve what he wants in his house to his guests. But it's also "the people's house" and serves their interests. And has great chefs and servers who may feel offended. And to say, "we had fast food because I know you people," is a bit demeaning. https://t.co/3FbcOqkmfd

doesn’t that fast food get cold sitting on the table while Trump drones on? so not only does he serve fast food at WH, he serves *cold* fast food? https://t.co/TnaAvGVHtJ

Has anyone checked to see if Trump owns stock in @McDonalds ~ that might explain a lot.

Second, he thinks it's going to create this entire storm of distraction. He wants social media to flip out on disrespectful this is or how unhealthy it is.
This ends up shifting a focus from the real issues that he is dealing with. Countless investigations.

I enjoy a visit to McDonalds occasionally but I wouldn’t insult honoured guests with a Big Mac for dinner. Trump is a no class, cheap, disrespectful……I can’t bring myself to write the word circling in my head. https://t.co/3QVYDmeQEs

Such a waste. Imagine all the beautiful meals that could be cooked and served by the Whitehouse chef. Meals that actually make the tastebuds sing. A Big Mac is junk food, so unfilling and unbecoming. This president is total trash. Athletes don’t eat trash. The leftovers for him

Nothing says CONGRATULATIONS like a cold Big Mac.
