Michael Cohen gave a blockbuster performance during his testimony before the House Oversight Committee today, during which he alleged that Trump has committed a bevy of criminal acts and is in fact a racist and conman, the two words which many Americans would agree best describe our current president.
Throughout the hearing, Republicans attacked and mocked Cohen in an effort to discredit him and protect the leader of their party. At no point did they make even a superficial effort to ask Cohen incisive questions about what he knows of Trump, his crimes, or his character. As such, the Republican members of the committee ended up looking like complete partisan hacks and it was abundantly clear to anyone of good sense watching that the GOP has no interest in getting to the truth if it means sacrificing power.
After slogging through an entire day of Republican antagonization and insightful Democratic questions, Cohen concluded his testimony with perhaps his most disturbing comments to date. After reflecting on the fact that working in the service of Trump has destroyed his life, ruined his career, and hurt his family, Cohen dove into ominous prognostication.
Drawing on what he’s learned about Trump from their over a decade of working together in close proximity, the now-disbarred attorney made a prediction about the 2020 presidential election: the president may not honor the peaceful transition of power if he loses.
“Given my experience working for Mr. Trump, I fear that if he loses the election in 2020, that there will never be a peaceful transition of power and this is why I agreed to appear before you today,” Cohen said.
While the prediction may seem outlandish at first blush, it’s absolutely in keeping with the authoritarian inclinations Trump has displayed in the past. He has no respect for our democratic institutions, as evinced by his recent naked power grab in which he sought to ignore the constitutional balance of powers between the branches of government by circumventing Congress and declaring a state of emergency to move forward with his border wall project.
President Trump cannot be trusted, and one need not stretch the imagination too far to picture a scenario in which he loses the election but claims that millions of illegal immigrants voted against him, or that the Democrats rigged the ballots. He is a man enshrouded in conspiracy theories and it’s up to every patriotic American to remain vigilant, lest we slide into a tinpot dictatorship.
