A Republican senator just betrayed Trump and put his entire wall gambit at risk

President Trump still doesn’t have his border wall and is as acutely aware of his failure to deliver on his signature campaign promise as his supporters are. With Democrats in control of the House of Representatives, his path to legitimate funding for his vanity project has become completely blocked. Rather than respect this basic fact and the democratic values that underpin it, he decided to declare a state of emergency to allocate money to the wall.

Unfortunately for the president, a third of Defense Department money he wants to use to construct the wall has already been spent. On top of that, Democrats lead by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi are already taking steps to block Trump’s flagrant abuse of executive power. The House intends to vote on a resolution tomorrow that would reverse the president’s executive action

“The president’s act is lawless and does violence to our Constitution, and therefore, to our democracy. Not only is he disrespecting the legislative branch and the Constitution of the United States, he is dishonoring the office in which he serves,” said Pelosi on Friday.

Now, Trump has received even more bad news as the Democrats gain an unlikely ally. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) says she is “likely” to add her support to the resolution to block Trump’s emergency.

“I want to make sure that the resolution of disapproval is exactly what I think it is, because if it is as I understand it to be, I will likely be supporting the resolution to disapprove of the action,” Murkowski said, according to The Associated Press.

In another interview with KTUU, she added that she would “probably” vote in favor of the resolution.

“When I say probably, I want to make sure that what in fact we are voting on when it comes to the Senate is what I believe it is. If it’s what I have seen right now, I will support the resolution to disapprove,” said Murkowski.

Murkowski went on to explain that she’s concerned about the separation of powers and that her possible support of the resolution is based around making sure Trump doesn’t overstep his constitutional powers. Her defection could prove to be a major blow as the resolution is expected to sail through the House of Representatives. Once it reaches the GOP-controlled Senate it will require Republican support to pass.

Hopefully, Murkowski ends up standing up to Trump’s rank authoritarianism and inspires other Republicans to do the same. The president is engaged in a naked power grab, the kind of thing that conservatives would take to the streets over if it were a Democratic president. He must be stopped.
