Earlier this week, a U.S. Coast Guardsman was arrested for plotting a mass assassination of prominent Democrats ranging from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Lt. Christopher Hasson, the suspect in question, was found with a stockpile of guns and a thousand rounds of ammunition and had ties to white nationalists.
Unfortunately, the terrifying incident is hardly surprising given the political atmosphere of fear and division that has been stoked by the current occupant of the White House. Having a president who regularly vilifies the free press as “enemies of the people” and who openly flirts with conspiracy theories about the opposite party encourages dangerous men like Hasson to carry out violent acts.
Trump has created a large mob of delusional supporters completely untethered from reality, it’s only natural that some of them would break in disturbing ways.
Now, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders — who can most accurately be described as a vile sycophant and paid liar — is trying to stamp down on the obvious connection between the president’s rhetoric and men like Hasson. Today she was asked directly about Hasson and whether or not Trump plans to tone down his rhetoric to discourage violence. Absurdly, she claimed that Trump bears no responsibility for things like this.
“I certainly don’t think that the president at any point has done anything but condemn violence against journalists or anyone else. In fact, every single time something like this happens the president is typically one of the first people to condemn the violence and the media is the first people to blame the president,” Huckabee Sanders said with a straight face.

It’s worth pointing out that Trump still hasn’t tweeted about the Hasson mass murder plot, but he did find time to tweet about disgraced television actor Jussie Smollett, in case it wasn’t already clear where the president’s priorities lie.
Huckabee Sanders went on to give some lip service to bipartisanship and unity, still refusing to make Trump take any responsibility for his violent rhetoric. And it is indeed violent, as the president has a long history of encouraging his supporters to “knock the crap” out of people and other such pleasantries.

“We should all join together and start condemning the violence whether it’s against members of the media, whether it’s against Democrats, Republicans, any person in this country. That is is unacceptable and that’s why every time it comes up we have been consistent and said we condemn violence in all forms,” said Huckabee Sanders, ignoring the rumbling sound as two-thirds of the country roll their eyes in unison.
