Yesterday, the Trump administration unveiled a proposed new effort to end the criminalization of homosexuality around the globe. The announcement surprised many, especially given the blatant bigotry and regressive “morality” consistently displayed by the president and his cronies, including a vice president who may have supported the downright medieval practice of conversion therapy in the past.
“It is concerning that, in the 21st century, some 70 countries continue to have laws that criminalize LGBTI status or conduct,” one U.S. official said, according to NBC News.
The new campaign to decriminalize homosexuality is specifically aimed at criticizing Iran over its human rights abuses against the LGBTQ community and, while an admirable goal, the White House’s true intent should be obvious to anyone who has been paying attention to the Trump administration. Since our racist leader took office, he and his cabinet of bloodthirsty hawks have been spoiling for a fight with Iran, and this campaign appears to be just the latest barrage in their ongoing PR war. There is little reason to believe that they sincerely care about the rights of LGBTQ people.
Today, Trump was asked about the new, much-publicized initiative by a reporter. Trump asked the reporter to repeat the question and, once he heard it clearly, visibly drew a blank and astonishingly admitted that he had no idea what she was talking about.
“I don’t know which report you’re talking about. We have many reports,” he said, despite the fact that it’s a campaign for decriminalization, not a “report.”
It’s truly incredible that the president wouldn’t be aware of such a major policy rollout, especially when it’s supposedly going to be pushed on a global scale. Clearly, the president doesn’t really know or care what his administration is doing around the world. He’d much rather spend his days in “Executive Time,” that is to say watching Fox News and angrily tweeting.
Like so many other Trump moments, this is utterly pathetic.
