CNN just hired a Republican who pledged loyalty to Trump to coordinate 2020 election coverage

For the past two years, corporate mainstream news network CNN has been barraged with criticism and vitriol by President Trump and his cronies for their crack reporting on his myriad scandals and appalling policy decisions, disparaged as “fake news” and denounced as enemies of the state.

Unfortunately, it appears that they have decided to take the approach of if you can’t beat’em, join ’em in an extremely ill-advised but seemingly inevitable shift to present “more diverse opinions” — which somehow always means “hire more right-wing psychopaths” in today’s media landscape.

POLITICO reported today that Sarah Isgur, a former Trump administration official and spokeswoman for former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will be the political editor in charge of their 2020 election coverage.

While it’s not unusual for political insiders to join newsrooms — though it should be — it is “almost unheard of” for a major news organization to give such an important editorial position to someone who has no experience in journalism at all.

To do so right after literally thousands of experienced journalists have been laid off by greedy billionaires and uncaring investors who care more about their bottom line than informing the public is a deeply disturbing harbinger of what’s to come for the American journalistic tradition.

While she might not have ever worked in the news before, what Isgur does have is a loyalty pledge to Donald Trump, decades of experience working for failed Republican political candidates (Fiorina, Cruz, and Romney), and a history of promoting dangerous false conspiracy theories when it suited her.

While working for the Carly Fiorina campaign in 2015, she used her Twitter account to promote doctored smear videos about Planned Parenthood that falsely accused the beloved family planning provider of selling aborted fetuses to biomedical institutes.

On top of that, she’s been actively hostile to journalism and towards her new colleagues at CNN, which she disparaged as the “Clinton News Network,” and has previously slammed reporters for simply reporting the truth about Trump and his racist conspiracy theories.

Staff at CNN were reportedly blindsided by the hiring. “It’s extremely demoralizing for everyone here,” said an editorial staffer to the Daily Beast. “People are generally confused.”

It’s obvious that the president of CNN, Jeff Zucker, is once again going out of his way to try to placate the president, cravenly caving to pressure and lusting for ratings just like he did when he allowed Donald Trump eight minutes of primetime air to make a contrived and falsehood-ridden pitch for his personal desert monument to xenophobia and white nationalism.

The idea that right-wing viewers will change the channel if CNN fills its talking head boxes with honking MAGA chuds is absolutely preposterous and simply provides a convenient cover for the cynical and sinister decision to preemptively ensure that loyal conservatives are in place to sabotage and derail the growing pressure for substantial wealth redistribution and the channeling of public fury at the excesses of the monied elites that will be a major part of the 2020 Democratic primary discourse.

CNN and Jeff Zucker’s constant wall-to-wall coverage of Trump during the last election helped propel him into the White House, and he’s making it clear that he’s ready to do it again. God forbid someone raise his taxes a little bit.
