President Trump’s descent into overt authoritarianism accelerated drastically today as he made the announcement many were expecting: he is declaring a state of emergency in order to build his border wall. Since Democrats control the House of Representatives and refuse to give him the funding he desires for the racist vanity project, he’s decided to pursue this clearly unconstitutional circumvention of Congress.
During his rambling rollout speech, Trump acknowledged that his order will end up in court and that he could lose ruling after ruling but that he hopes the case lands in front of the Supreme Court and they side with him.

By abusing his powers as president, he plans to divert billions of dollars to address an emergency that doesn’t exist, a crisis that he fabricated to pander to his xenophobic supporters. Condemnation from Democrats was swift.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took to Twitter to share a video of his announcement, in which he said that he “didn’t need” to do what he’s doing, which Pelosi pointed out is tantamount to admitting that it’s a fake emergency.
In the clip, Trump confessed that he is declaring an emergency because he wants to build the wall faster and that he could have chosen to do it over a longer period of time. It’s odd that he would be so open about the fact that he’s lying in order to fund the wall, but at this point it seems he’s realized that his followers will accept anything he does, so delusional and cultish are they in their support of him.

Rising star Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to Twitter to slam Trump’s announcement by also pointing out that his “I didn’t need to do this” admission shows that the president knows there isn’t really an emergency along the southern border. She rightfully accused him of “faking a crisis” which is really the only reasonable way to interpret what Trump is doing.
One can safely presume that this clip of Trump will show up in court, and be used to prove that knew there was no emergency, that today’s announcement had nothing to do with keeping the country to safe, and everything to do with petty partisan politicking.
“I didn’t need to do this” is admitting this isn’t an emergency at all.

Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced his support Trump’s flagrant power grab, proving once again that the Republican Party is more than willing to endorse overt fascism if it means they can get some of their preferred policy outcomes. Trump delivered the tax cuts to billionaires that are the lifeblood of the parasitic, plutocratic GOP and so they’re willing to let him get away with just about anything.
It cannot be stressed enough what a dangerous precedent it will set if Trump succeeds. We are on the verge of a constitutional crisis, precipitated by the president’s shocking disregard for the separation of powers. He is pushing the American presidency closer to a dictatorship.
Although it hardly needs pointing out, it’s worth reflecting at least briefly on the fact that if a Democratic president were to exploit his or her powers in such a fashion the Republican Party and its conservative media apparatus would have an unprecedented meltdown. The party of “small government” only cares about its so-called principles when they can be weaponized against Democrats.
