Trump just publicly insulted his “intelligence people” in a disgraceful Twitter rant

Yesterday, a long string of President Trump’s lies were embarrassingly exposed by the intelligence committee during as an address to the Senate Intelligence Committee by  Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and CIA Director Gina Haspel.

One after another, the president’s claims that ISIS has been defeated (in fact they still have thousands of fighters), that North Korea is denuclearizing (they will continue to maintain their nuclear capabilities), and that the Iran deal is defective (Iran is not working to produce a nuclear device) were knocked down and shredded.

Even for someone as infamously dishonest as Trump, it was a major blow to his credibility to have his own intelligence community directly refute claims he has made about national security. It shows that Trump simply isn’t paying attention to the intelligence he’s being provided, or he’s chosen to lie about it to make himself look good. Either is possible, and both demonstrate a deep unfitness to lead.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before Trump reacted to his public humiliation. This morning, he took to Twitter to slam the IC, accusing them of being “extremely passive and naive” when it comes to Iran. “They are wrong!” he proclaimed about the lifelong intelligence professionals, without providing any proof to back up his attack. He then rambled through his usual talking points, all of which have already been disproven by the IC.

“Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!” he ended the second tweet, a deeply offensive, childish thing to say about the men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping Americans safe.

Trump has no idea what he’s talking about as usual, and for him to impugn the reputation of those who do is a perfect example of the way his administration celebrates idiocy and puts ignorance on a pedestal by ignoring experts. There is a simple fact at work here: Trump’s ego makes the country less safe.
