The State of the Union address was a major point of contention during the recent shutdown standoff, as Speaker of the House Pelosi refused to allow President Donald Trump the opportunity to congratulate himself for his imaginary accomplishments and doubtlessly spew appallingly racist and xenophobic myths about undocumented immigrants until the government was re-opened.
But now that it is, the Speaker still isn’t giving him the green light. The State of the Union address to Congress, which was supposed to be held on Tuesday, January 29th, is “not planned” yet and won’t be until the two sides can find a “mutually agreeable date.”
“What I said to the president is when the government is opened we will discuss a mutually agreeable date” said Pelosi to reporters. Her spokesman added that “It’s not happening on 1/29.”

On Wednesday, Pelosi told him in a letter that “the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until the government has opened.”
President Trump briefly considered holding his state of the union address elsewhere but ultimately decided it would look too much like a defeat, so he capitulated and agreed to delay his big speech.

Now he just has to hope Speaker Pelosi agrees to a new date sometime before government funding runs out in three weeks and we have to go through the entire process again.
While it’s not the biggest deal in the world, the delay of the State of the Union is another tiny jab at Trump that reminds him that life is going to be a lot harder without a Republican majority to rubber-stamp his every wish.
