A California Republican lawmaker just switched parties and pointed the finger directly at Trump

As the Republican Party crumbles beneath the straining weight of its president’s prodigious criminality and incompetence, American conservatives are starting to flee in the hopes of escaping the blast zone of the eventual implosion. Now, the GOP has lost another one of its own elected officials to defection.

The San Diego Tribune reports that California Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, who recently won his reelection bid, has officially announced that he is trading in his red elephant for a blue donkey and stated that Trump as one of the major reasons why he’s defecting to the Democrats.

Maienschein, who represents the 77th District in the California Assembly, has served in that role since he was originally elected in 2012. Prior to that, he served as a San Diego City Councilman. Now, he says he finds the GOP drifting away from the values that drew him to it in the first place and believes he no longer has a home there.

The move has major implications for the dying California Republican Party, as Democrats now control 61/80 Assembly seats. The GOP’s already tenuous grasp on any of the levers of power in the state is slipping with each passing day

Brian Maienschein made his reasons for the change very clear and while he singled out Donald Trump, he also made sure to aim some criticisms at the broader Republican Party as well.

“Leaving the Republican Party is not easy. I can either keep fighting to change the Republican Party or I can fight for my constituents. I choose to use my energy and skills for the people I represent,”  said Maienschein.

“Donald Trump has led the Republican Party to the extreme on issues that divide our country, but his leadership is not the lone reason for my change in party affiliation. I too have changed. As the Republican Party has drifted further right, I – and my votes – have changed. As a single father to two girls I am guided by my hopes and dreams for their future,” he added.

While Republicans are obviously deeply displeased by the switch, state Democrats are warmly welcoming Maienschein into the only sane majority political party left in this country.

More Republicans would be wise to follow lead Maienschein’s and jump ship immediately. There is no excuse for supporting the GOP while its leader is Donald Trump and the longer politicians remain Republicans, the harder the stench will be to clean off once Trump inevitably goes under.
