Trump’s threats against Michael Cohen’s family just paid off big time for him

Threats and extortion are tactics more typically associated with gangsters than the president of the United States, but now in the era of Donald Trump, it’s difficult to tell the difference.

Particularly after Michael Cohen — the president’s former lawyer and fixer for the Trump Organization — cited Trump’s “ongoing threats against his family” in announcing the postponement of his public testimony before the House Oversight Committee, formerly scheduled for February 7th.

Trump first tried to intimidate Cohen through threats against his family when he sent a  tweet out late last week that practically begged law enforcement to investigate his former attorney’s father-in-law in what many people interpreted as another attempt by the president at obstruction of justice in the multiple investigations against him.

Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis made the announcement on behalf of his client this morning.

“Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen’s continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by advice of counsel, Mr. Cohen’s appearance will be postponed to a later date,” Davis said in a statement. “Mr. Cohen wishes to thank Chairman Cummings for allowing him to appear before the House Oversight Committee and looks forward to testifying at the appropriate time.”

Davis went on to explain that Cohen felt compelled to consider his priorities in making this difficult decision.

“This is a time where Mr. Cohen had to put his family and their safety first,” he said.

Given that Michael Cohen will be entering prison to begin a three-year sentence on March 6th, the postponement calls into question whether he will ever actually testify in front of Congress.

The fact that there is now no difference between the behavior of Donald Trump and that of a low-level mob stooge is a sign of how far the nation has fallen under his administration. He needs to be driven from office at the earliest possible opportunity.
