President Trump’s war against the media hasn’t played out as he may have once hoped. New, deeply damning stories about his administration’s corruption and incompetence emerge with each passing week and despite constant whining on Twitter and in front of cameras, Trump is unable to seize control of the discourse around his own presidency.
Soon, Special Counsel Rober Mueller will release the results of his investigation and when he does — presuming they turn to be even a tenth as disturbing as many suspect they will — the president will be buried beneath an avalanche of negative news coverage if not outright criminal proceedings.
Whether because he’s anticipating that eventuality, or simply because he’s battered and worn down by this past weekend, during which The New York Times published a stunning story revealing that the F.B.I. opened an inquiry into President Trump out of concerns that he could be secretly working for Russia, Trump took to Twitter this morning to make a weird request of the media.
He tweeted that the “Fake News” is getting crazier and more dishonest by the day, a pathetic and transparent attempt to shore up his credibility against the news organizations that have succeeded in repeatedly exposing his lies.
Trump also repeated his favorite lie that his administration has had “tremendous success,” conveniently ignoring the fact that his only real “accomplishment” to date was the passing of massive tax cuts which exploded the deficit and served as a handout to the super wealthy.
The tweet ended with Trump asking the media to “take two weeks off and come back rested. Chill!” Obviously, he’d be thrilled if the news stations stopped covering his constant failures for a short period of time, but unfortunately for him and luckily for the country, the media doesn’t work for Trump. If this country doesn’t get a break from this terrible president, he doesn’t get a break from the news covering his myriad inadequacies.
The Fake News gets crazier and more dishonest every single day. Amazing to watch as certain people covering me, and the tremendous success of this administration, have truly gone MAD! Their Fake reporting creates anger and disunity. Take two weeks off and come back rested. Chill!
