President Trump spent his Sunday cooped up in the White House, and if his incessant tweeting was any indicator, quietly steaming about the fact that he couldn’t leave dreary Washington to go play golf or rub shoulders with the finest plastic surgeons Boca Raton have to offer at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Growing steadily angrier as the day went on, the President leveled a disgustingly racist attack against his first major 2020 challenger, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MASS), mocking her for the video in which she drank a beer on Instagram live and introduced the nation to her husband.
As racist as it is bewildering, the president’s tweet indicates the president’s brain cells are expiring in real time. Too lazy to actually craft together an actual insult, he just sputtered out all the Native American references he could think of to try to take her down. What he was trying to accomplish with this is unclear.

If Elizabeth Warren, often referred to by me as Pocahontas, did this commercial from Bighorn or Wounded Knee instead of her kitchen, with her husband dressed in full Indian garb, it would have been a smash! pic.twitter.com/D5KWr8EPan

For Trump, a man who has spent decades smearing Native Americans with disgusting racism, to invoke the genocidal massacres of Native Americans at Little Bighorn and Wounded Knee by American soldiers as a way to attack Elizabeth Warren is appallingly offensive.
For him to do this now adds insult to injury, since hundreds of Native Americans communities are being hit hard by the shutdown as a lack of funds hinders their access to healthcare and other essential services from the federal government.
Everyday I think I can’t be surprised anymore—but what in the actual hell. Wounded Knee was the massacre of more 300 Lakota men, women, and children. And the current shutdown is hitting Native communities extra hard. This comment isn’t “racially charged”. It is racist, full stop. pic.twitter.com/XAuynMRktR

Given the amount of mockery and public attacks that Trump and the right-wing have heaped on her, it’s clear they are desperately working to undermine her and kick the teeth out of her progressive policy platform as she prepares to make a run for the White House.
Trump has settled on identity politics as the way to tear her down, mocking her for her admittedly unwise decision to do a DNA test to prove her Native American heritage and attempting to paint her as “racist.”
But the American people know that Warren has a long track record of fighting against the oligarch class on behalf of working Americans and protecting us from the predations of big corporations, and we know that she will continue to do so from the White House. Trump knows it too — which is why he’s debasing himself so low with these hateful tweets.
