Trump just got really creepy while talking about women taped up in vans

President Trump is engaged in an all-out media blitz over his preposterous Mexican border wall this week, constantly thrashing about in front of cameras and ranting on Twitter about the fabricated emergency along the southern border.

Since the Democrats in control of the House of Representatives refuse to waste billions of dollars on the wasteful barrier, the president has no legitimate means of funding it. All he can do now is whine about it. And whine he has.

Today, in a tawdry publicity stunt to push the wall, Trump traveled south to visit the border (wasting tax dollars in the process). Once he arrived, he decided to give one of his rambling, truth-free speeches at a Border Patrol station.

While he started out by hitting his usual, dishonest talking points, Trump quickly veered into dark territory. Channeling his well-documented ability to fearmonger, he painted a graphic picture of dangerous criminals engaged in human trafficking across the border.

The president claimed that traffickers easily drive their vehicles into the United States and that they “have women tied up, they have tape over their mouths, electrical tape, usually blue tape as they call it, it’s powerful stuff. Not good. And they have three, four, five of them in vans or three of them in backseats of cars and they just drive right in.”

While the strange attention to detail in describing such a scene is clearly engineered to make human trafficking — a serious problem that needs addressing but which a wall wouldn’t stop — feel more concrete to voters, one can’t help but feel like Trump, a self-admitted sexual predator himself, took a perverse delight in sketching out the visuals of the scene. His weird specification of the color of the tape almost feels like a man describing one of his own fantasies.

Beyond that, it simply defies believability that Trump — the man who bragged about sexually assaulting women, who has been credibly accused by over 22 women of sexual misconduct, and who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl — actually cares about human trafficking or the suffering of women. His entire speech was a gross, exploitative political move, intended not to help people in need, but to shore up support amongst his voters.

The sooner the president is forced to abandon his vanity project, the sooner the country can get back to sanely addressing the problems we face.
