Mike Huckabee just defended Trump’s Scrooge-like Christmas call with the most bizarre excuse ever

After The New York Daily News portrayed President Trump as the Grinch on its front cover over his Christmas government shutdown, the president proceeded to live up to the image by deflating the imagination of a 7-year-old girl on a holiday phone call by saying “Are you still a believer in Santa? Because at 7, it’s marginal, right?”

The news of Trump’s fantasy-crashing comments drew a torrent of criticism from defenders of Christmas traditions and believers that only parents should determine the proper time to expose their children to the harsh realities of the truth (or to accused sexual predators, for that matter.)

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, father of Trump’s Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and now a Fox News contributor, predictably rose the president’s defense in an appearance on Fox & Friends this morning.

The comparison that Huckabee used in his vindication of Trump’s presumptuous question, however, set the lowest bar imaginable for presidential behavior in a sign of how far the public’s expectations for the nation’s chief executive have fallen.

“What is wrong with people?” Huckabee asked. “It wasn’t like he was boiling the little girl’s bunny rabbit in a pot on the stove. He asked a simple question. You can never find a way that President Trump will make some of the people in the press happy. It doesn’t matter what he does. If he didn’t make the call, if he didn’t talk to the little girl, they would say he was curled up in a fetal position in the White House and was unwilling to come out and talk to anybody. The man can’t catch a break.”

Yes, according to Huckabee, unless the president is caught torturing and murdering children’s pets red-handed, Trump deserves a pass from the media for anything he may say or do. The odd analogy would seem completely out of left field if not for the fact that Huckabee’s own son was fired as a counselor at an Arkansas Boy Scout camp for killing a dog.

Twitter exploded with derision at Huckabee’s bizarre comments.

If you can think of any other heinous acts that President Trump has yet to commit to help set the standard for presidential behavior any lower than it already is, feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comments section below this article.

Sorry, but “it’s not like he’s separating immigrant families and locking little children in cages to let them die” is already taken. You’ll have to go lower still.
