Trump just publicly disrespected George H.W. Bush in the middle of a prayer at his funeral

George H.W. Bush’s funeral today offers an opportunity for Americans to momentarily put aside their partisan animosities and reflect on the legacy, both good and bad, of a man who dedicated his life in service to the United States. In a better world, we would be able to stop talking about the creature currently ensconced in the Oval Office for at least one day as we discuss the presidency of a man a thousand times his superior.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump insists on sucking the air out of every news story until it becomes about him, and such is quickly becoming the case with today’s funeral services. Earlier today, Americans were forced to watch an uncomfortable interaction between the Trumps and the Obamas followed by a refusal by the Trumps and Clintons to acknowledge each other sitting in the same row.

The embarrassing display from 45 wasn’t done there. Footage has now emerged of all of the First Couples except for Donald and Melania Trump praying The Apostles’ Creed during the service.

The video is striking. As the Obamas, Clintons, and Carters hold their pamphlets and read the prayer Trump has his hanging limply at his side, staring ahead silently. Melania also appears to be intentionally refusing to pray.

While one can’t be sure, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that the Trumps chose not to pray as a sign of disrespect towards the late President Bush. Donald has repeatedly feuded with the Bush family over the years.

Beyond that, there’s a cynical irony in the fact that the least pious attendee is the president that the evangelical voting bloc showed out en masse to elect. Once again, Trump has shown himself to be a fake Christian who only exploited the religion to become president.
