It’s a very tight competition for who is the most despicable right-wing ghoul that Donald Trump has elevated into his administration, but somehow Christian extremist Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has managed to carve herself out and hold on to a solid place in the top five or so.
A billionaire who essentially bought herself her prominent position on the Trump team, DeVos has used her time in office to wage war on our public schools and has done everything in her power to make life harder for American students.
Whether it is rolling back President Obam’s rules governing campus sexual assault, revoking guidances aiming to curb racial discrimination in schools, stripping transgender students of their rights, or cutting off debt relief for students defrauded by fake for-profit “colleges,” she has done nothing but heap hardship on America’s most vulnerable students.

Which might be why Betsy DeVos has emerged as a target of investigation for no less than five House Committees.
Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, is set to take a giant magnifying glass to the effects of her defense of blood-sucking for-profit colleges that enroll tens of thousands of veterans every year and often leave them without usable degrees and drowning in debt.
“I want to examine the extent to which her rollbacks of regulations negatively impact veterans,” said Takano. Given that DeVos ended the Obama regulations that mandated loan forgiveness for students who had unwittingly fallen prey to fraudulent for-profit colleges — like the President’s own “Trump University” — he’s likely to find that countless veterans were very negatively impacted.
He will be joined by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), who will likely take over the House Education Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings’ House Oversight Committee, Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s House Appropriations, and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) Financial Services Committee, according to POLITICO’s sources.
Waters accused DeVos of a “full-on attack on civil rights protections for students—particularly students of color, students with disabilities, transgender students, and survivors of sexual assault” while DeLauro slammed DeVos’ student loan record as “appalling” and vowed that “I will make sure Secretary DeVos knows Americans want her to protect students and veterans, not the for-profit school industry.”
The Trump Department of Education is packed with former for-profit college lobbyists and bigwigs. Julian Schmoke, a former associate dean for the notoriously fraudulent DeVry’s engineering and information sciences college, is currently in charge of the fraud enforcement unit.
But with a new Democratic Congress coming in, American students can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there’s somebody who’s ready to hold them accountable and put a check on their plutocratic anti-student agenda.
