Ever since the end of the bitterly contested 2016 Democratic primaries, a narrative has persisted about how the Democratic Party’s leftist wing is “divisive” and intent on holding the party hostage until the center gives in to their “radical” demands of things like universal healthcare and a meaningful plan to combat climate change.
But as Democrats prepare to take over control of the House of Representatives, the escalating battle over the Speakership makes it clear that it’s not the leftists who are “dividing” the party.
The most prominent leftist in the upcoming Democratic Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), took to Twitter this afternoon to shame right-wing Democrats for holding their party hostage in a transparent attempt to deprive the Democrats of capable leadership and replace Speaker Pelosi with someone willing to give Trump whatever he wants.

9 Dems are choosing to hold the entire 220+ caucus hostage if we don’t accept their GOP-friendly rules that will hamstring healthcare efforts from the get-go.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is set to reclaim the gavel and lead the opposition against Trump and the Republican-strangled Senate, but her position is being challenged by conservative “Democrats” who are demanding that she be replaced with someone who is “willing to work with the President” and put an end to “obstructionism and pure partisanship.”
Nine “Democrats” from the perniciously named “Problem Solvers” caucus are refusing to back Nancy Pelosi for Speaker until she agrees to their demands and implement their “Break the Gridlock” rules, which would make it easier for rank-and-file members to bypass party leadership in bringing bills to the floor, ensure the minority party has power on the rules committee, and requiring a 3/5ths supermajority for consideration of bills under “closed rules” (in which there can be no amendments except for those by committee reporting the bill) — all of which are terribly convenient for a Republican Party that has suddenly found itself in the minority.
Those rules are written by the “Problem Solvers,” who are themselves a product of the political “reform group” No Labels, which is led by traitor scumbag Joe Lieberman, the man responsible for the loss of the public option in the Affordable Care Act.
The group’s honorary co-chairs are Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and former Republican Joe Manchin (“D”-WV), who both voted to confirm accused rapist Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
No Labels and the “Problem Solvers” are funded by shadowy billionaires like Pete Peterson and Jerry Reinsdorf with the explicit purpose of exploiting public frustration with Washingtonian gridlock in order to cut Medicare and Social Security — which just so happens to be the next item on the Republican political agenda.
So what they are really saying when they say they want an end to “obstructionism” is that we want someone who will work with them to gut the social safety net in order to pay off the debts that their outrageous tax cuts for the wealthy have created.
While “bipartisanism” is, in theory, all very well and good, the Republican Party have made it clear what their agenda is, and we should have no part in it — not to mention the fact that eight years of racially motivated obstructionism against Pres. Obama means they don’t deserve any cooperation or benefit of the doubt whatsoever.
The right-wing agenda focuses on banning abortion, oppressing LGBTQ Americans, crushing workers’ rights, gutting the social safety net, pillaging the environment, fracking everything that can be fracked, starving public schools and funding private Christian extremist indoctrination centers, expanding the carceral state and throwing immigrants en masse into concentration camps, and there is no good reason for any real “Democrat” to ever support any of those appalling goals.
The Republican Party brought Obama’s political agenda to a standstill and were rewarded for it with control of all three branches of government. Ocasio-Cortez is absolutely right; the Republicans and Trump do not deserve to be negotiated with or to have their demands accommodated. Now is the time for us to stand up for what we believe in and to take definitive action to slow Trump’s destructive agenda as much as we can.
