With a president of their own making in the White House, the right-wing media machine no longer has one obvious target to focus on. A Hillary Clinton presidency would have given them endless material to fabricate outrage around, but since their marching orders prevent them from targeting President Trump, they’re forced instead to lob attacks at random prominent liberals, even if they’re no longer in power.
Such was the case this morning when Fox News decided to attack former President Obama for the umpteenth time. Fox host Sandra Smith and analyst Brad Blakeman drew issue with comments Obama made yesterday at the Obama Foundation Summit.
While trying to diagnose what exactly is wrong with our country at this current moment Obama said that we are failing to make progress in some areas because “because we are still confused, blind, shrouded with hate, anger, racism, mommy issues.”
While he didn’t mention Trump by name, the list of ills neatly describes the current craven occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The “mommy issues” bit, in particular, could be seen as a reference to a Politico article that dissected Trump’s relationship with his mother to explain his behavior.

While perhaps a blunt statement, one can scarcely deny that there is truth to Obama’s words. Our country is the most polarized and divided it has been in a long time, and there is a vast wing of the electorate moving increasingly towards fearmongering, conspiracy theories, and bigotry. If we fail to recognize this we will fail to correct it.
Of course, Fox News isn’t interested in actual solutions. The propaganda outlet is only interested in whipping up resentment to generate ad revenue.
To this end, Blakeman attacked Obama, claiming that he was “outraged” before spewing some truly vile rhetoric. He said that Obama himself is more likely to have “mommy issues” because he’s biracial, a truly stunning racist comment.
“The first biracial president who missed a great opportunity to bring this country together because of who and what he was. Half white and half black. If anybody has mommy issues it’s the president. I never heard him talk about his mom, President Obama. To allege racism and mommy issues, and he was talking about the president, is beyond the pale,” said Blakeman.
Additionally, it’s deeply disingenuous for Blakeman to claim that Obama missed some unique opportunity to unite the country that presented itself due to him being biracial. The fact that Obama is African American is precisely why so many racists became enraged during his presidency.
It’s not Obama’s fault that the country grew more divided, it’s the racists’.
