Comey just called Republicans’ bluff and fired back with a defiant response to their subpoena

This morning, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee unveiled their last gasp efforts to derail the Trump-Russia investigation and keep the President from having to face the consequences of his actions.

After nearly eight years of partisan witch-hunts and naked efforts to obstruct the Special Counsel’s investigation, they’re going to go out the way they came in — chasing boogeymen and fanning the flames of absurd right-wing conspiracy theories.

Their last targets will be former FBI director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch. A source told reporters this morning that subpoenas will be issued for the ex-Justice Department officials in the coming weeks, ordering them to appear before the committee for interviews about their decisions in the run-up to the 2016 election.

The GOP’s move is obviously part of their larger effort to discredit Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation of the Donald J. Trump for President campaign and the allegations of collusion with Russian agents to interfere in the 2016 election.

Both Comey and Lynch have been demonized by the far-right, who accuse Mueller and everyone involved in investigating Trump-Russia of being part of the “deep state” that is out to get Trump as part of some grand conspiracy by the Clinton team and George Soros and possibly the lizardmen of the Illuminati.

With the turning over of the committee chairs and the subpoena power to Democrats in January, who have a very different set of plans for Trump and his Republican cronies, this is the only move they have left.

It’s not likely that the Republicans agree to his demand for a public hearing, because they’re not going to like what he has to say. But it’s safe to say that their plan is already getting off on the wrong foot — and that like the majority of their previous efforts, this is not going to end the way they want it to.
