President Trump says he wants to unite the country, but judging from his comments today, it seems his idea of bringing sides together seems more like inciting a gang war between the “very fine people” amongst his neo-Nazi followers and the anti-fascist coalition vilified by right-wing media as “Antifa.”
In an interview with The Daily Caller, the alt-right website co-founded by Fox News host Tucker Carlson to super-serve convenient untruths to an audience of receptive Proud Boys and their ilk, President Trump all but called for a new civil war, saying “they better hope that the opposition to Antifa decides not to mobilize.”
In a statement akin to brandishing a pipe and telling a bar patron that they had better hope that no one catches them looking in their girlfriend’s direction again, Trump all but begged the alt-right to get ready for war against his Antifa opponents who stand ready to combat the forces of Nazism, racism, and xenophobia across the country to prevent a recurrence of the type of authoritarian takeover that Hitler engineered in Germany during the 1930’s.
“These people, like the Antifa — they better hope that the opposition to Antifa decides not to mobilize. Because if they do, they’re much tougher. Much stronger. Potentially much more violent. And Antifa’s going to be in big trouble. But so far they haven’t done that and that’s a good thing,” Trump declared.
It’s unsurprising that The Daily Caller asked the president about Antifa, given the fact that demonstrators associated with the movement surrounded the Washington DC residence of the website’s founder last week to protest his spreading of white nationalism through the mainstream media platform he has on Fox News.
Among the groups ready to fight against Antifa, according to Trump, are people from exactly the institutions that everyday Americans would be most horrified to discover were staffed by people who support anti-democratic, white nationalist principles.
“Because if you look, the other side, it’s the military. It’s the police. It’s a lot of very strong, a lot of very tough people. Tougher than them. And smarter than them,” the president menacingly warned.
While the majority of Americans can safely discount the president’s ability to estimate intelligence, give his own deficiencies in that sphere, Trump was clearly trying to be clever in trying to both incite his followers to take up his defense if the Mueller probe leads to attempts to remove him from office and simultaneously intimidate his Antifa detractors.
For a president supposedly trying to unite a divided nation, Trump is doing everything he can to stir up not only animosity, but actual physical altercations between the most despicable of the violent right-wing “activists” who have already caused the majority of terrorist deaths in this country since 9/11 and those opposed to the un-American values that those neo-Nazis represent.
He must be condemned and stopped as soon as possible.
