Brian Kemp’s voter suppression just backfired on him personally when he tried voting today

One of the most hotly contested elections on the ballot today is the Georgia gubernatorial race, pitting Democrat Stacey Abrams against blatantly corrupt Republican Brian Kemp. Kemp is a detestable candidate who has been abusing his powers as Georgia’s Secretary of State to suppress voting turnouts and even got caught on a hot mic lamenting high turnout.

All day, images, videos, and stories of voting problems in Georgia have been emerging, painting a picture of an election intentionally skewed to benefit the Republicans. It’s, of course, incredibly telling that Republicans fear democracy so deeply. They know their ideas are generally unpopular, and that more Americans heading to the polls means more votes for Democrats.

Ironically, Kemp himself ran into problems trying to vote today, giving him a taste of his own bitter medicine. While trying to cast his ballot, he discovered that his voting ID was invalid. The frustrating moment was caught on video and reported by local media.

Georgia law requires that voters present a valid state or federal government issued photo ID, a Georgia’s Driver’s License, a valid employee photo ID from a government job, a U.S. passport, military photo ID, or tribal photo ID.

Voter ID laws are one of the Republican Party’s preferred means of reducing voter turnout, specifically among lower-income Americans. It’s unclear what made Kemp’s ID invalid, and he was eventually able to cast his vote.

Still, there is a beautiful poetic justice in Kemp experiencing, even if for just a moment, the intense frustration, hopelessness, and disenfranchisement that he has visited on countless Georgians. If there is any justice, Democratic voters turnout will be enough to overwhelm the GOP’s dirty trick and Stacey Abrams will seize the governorship.
