The MAGABomber’s mom just penned a brutal Op-Ed fingering Trump as the culprit

Tomorrow’s midterms represent a watershed moment for American democracy. Voters will either show up en masse and vote for Democrats across the board, or the Trumpian creep of authoritarianism, illiberalism, and plutocracy will accelerate. There are countless reasons to vote blue across the ticket, not least of which is the rising dangerous rhetoric and outright violence fostered by this administration.

While the Republican Party would prefer the country move on, it’s important to remember that less than two weeks ago a devoted Trump supporter mailed explosive devices to numerous prominent liberal figures, including former President Barack and Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The MAGABomber was motivated and spurred on by President Trump’s divisive and hateful behavior and the incident can be firmly laid at his administration’s feet.

Now the bomber’s mother has come forward and penned a letter for ABC News to voice her sadness and shock over her son’s actions, and to point a finger at Trump and his enablers for creating an atmosphere that encourages men like the bomber to carry out their disturbed fantasies.

Madeline Sayoc wrote that while she hasn’t heard from her son in four years, she is “deeply hurt, sad, shocked and confused” that her son may have been the one responsible for spreading so much fear. She adds that he has been ill for some time and that America has a real mental health crisis.

Sayoc goes on to say that political leaders like President Trump fail to recognize that sick people all across the country take their hateful rhetoric to heart and use it as an excuse to commit violence. Unfortunately, she is giving Trump a little too much credit here, as it seems far more likely that he does realize the effects of his words but simply doesn’t care.

In any case, she is absolutely correct about the connection between our worsening political discourse and events like the MAGABomber saga. Americans must get out and vote tomorrow, and start to wrest our country back from the people working to destroy it.

Dear ABC:

I am presently recuperating from surgery last week and having difficulty breathing. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to write this letter to share my feelings and views. I awakened from my surgery in the hospital last week to learn that my son Cesar has been arrested as the accused (bomber).

While I have not lived with my son for 35 years or even heard from him in over four years, I cannot express how deeply hurt, sad, shocked and confused I am to hear that my son may have caused so many people to be put in fear for their safety. This is not how I raised him or my children.

While I am grateful that no one was actually harmed, all of us in America have an absolute right to live their lives without fear of violent harm, injury or death.

My son has been ill for a long time and my family and I have tried, over and over again, without success to urge him to get the help he needs.

We, in America, have a mental health crisis in this country and need to change the laws to allow families to compel and require mental health treatment for those in need of such treatment before their illness worsens to where it is too late.

Similarly, our political leaders, like our President, Donald Trump, need to recognize that there are many sick people in this country who take their rhetoric and words of “War with the Media” and “War with the Democrats” to heart and view such messages as a license to violently act out in our country.

This type of talk excites and incites and is unacceptable. I beg President Trump and others to refrain from talk of War with fellow Americans and remember, as Senator McCain taught us, that we may politically disagree, but we are all patriotic Americans and all we want is a safe country for all Americans.

Humbly,

Madeline Sayoc
