The hotly contested race for the governorship of Florida began with Republican candidate Ron DiSantis immediately joking about how his African-American opponent was “monkeying around” just moments after Andrew Gillum won the nomination — and it hasn’t gotten any better.
Neo-Nazis have just unleashed a horrendously racist robo-call on Florida voters that features an actor pretending to Gillum speaking in a stereotypical racist minstrel voice, referring to himself as the “Negro” Andrew Gillum — and it just gets worse from there:
“Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida. My esteemed opponent, who done called me a monkey, is doing a lot of hollering about how expensive my plans for health care be.
“He be thinkin of the white man’s medicine, which is very ‘spensive, cause it uses science and what not. But the medicine of my African race be very ‘fordable, fo it’s just puttin da chicken feets under your pilla during the full moon then don’t cost nothing at all…”
The ad goes on to blame Jews for not only the slave trade but also for “putting Negroes in charge over the white folk, just like they done after the Civil War.” Throughout the entire ad, music associated with black spirituality plays in the background while monkeys screech.
The call was paid for by the “Road to Power,” an anti-Semitic white supremacist group from Ohio that has been funding racist robocalls in political racists across the country, including one against California’s Senator Feinstein in which they accuse her of being a secret Israeli citizen on behalf of Republican Patrick Little, who they promised would “rid America of the Jew.”
As Trump has grown in prominence and power, neo-Nazis and white supremacists have felt bold enough to once more stick their heads out of their festering warrens and wear their bigotry on their sleeves. We cannot allow this kind of racism to become normalized in our society once again.
