Kanye West just made the worst kind of history in his Oval Office visit with Trump

World-famous musician Kanye West has become something of a pariah in recent months. The rapper-producer has always been a controversial figure but his strange, combative support of Donald Trump has even some of his most diehard fans jumping ship.

Today, Kanye visited Trump in the Oval Office for a meeting that quickly devolved into a media circus. As reporters photographed and filmed the strange duo, Kanye launched into a rant about his own mental illnesses, pontificated for a bit about manufacturing and trade policies he clearly doesn’t understand, bragged about himself, and heaped praise on Trump.

Throughout it all, Trump was uncharacteristically quiet, preferring instead to nod and smile along as Kanye launched into rant after rant after rant. It appears that the president has finally met someone whose ego overshadows his own.

The entire tawdry affair was demeaning to the office of the president, embarrassing for Kanye, and embarrassing for Trump. It reinforced the unfortunate truth that the American government under its current leader is little more than a reality television show. Neither of these men can be taken seriously in any kind of political sense and both of them clearly need someone to step in and set them straight.

The one point in the conversation that reflected at least somewhat well on Mr. West was when he condemned stop and frisk policies, which Trump recently suggested could help lower the crime rates in Chicago, Kanye’s hometown.

“We feel that stop and frisk does not help the relationships in the city and everyone that knew I was coming here asked about stop and frisk. That’s the number one thing that we’re having this conversation about,” Kanye said as Trump nodded along mutely.

According to Maggie Haberman of The New York Times, at one point Kanye said Trump may not have thought he’d have a “crazy motherf*cker” like him at his side. A historic moment to be sure, just not a good one.

It’s worth mentioning that if a guest of President Obama had ever used such language in front of media inside the Oval Office, the right-wing media would have had a complete meltdown. Instead, we’re forced to watch Trump and a once brilliant musician melt down together.
