During her long, rambling, and most importantly shameful speech today, Senator Collins (R-ME) tried to use Michael Avenatti and his client Julie Swetnick to excuse her decision to vote to confirm accused sexual predator Brett Kavanaugh to our nation’s highest court.

Collins exploited Swetnick’s allegations that Kavanaugh spiked punch with quaaludes and was involved with gang rapes to pretend that there was some baseless, coordinated effort to smear Kavanaugh. In reality, Republicans refused to adequately investigate Swetnick’s story and decided, without proper diligence, that it wasn’t credible.

The fact that Collins acted as if Swetnick’s claims were thoroughly vetted and found to be false shows that her entire grandstanding speech was nothing more than disingenuous politicking and designed specifically to shield her from much-deserved criticism over her vote.
We don’t know if Swetnick’s allegations are true because Republicans decided they didn’t care about the truth. Collins isn’t voting for Kavanaugh because he was unfairly attacked, she’s voting for him because she wants to and she lacks the courage to even admit it.

Avenatti, never one to back down from a fight, quickly took to Twitter to defend himself and his client. He said that Collins should be “ashamed” and pointed out that she has no right talking about Swetnick’s credibility since she and her compatriots simply decided that she wasn’t credible.

.@SenatorCollins should be ashamed of herself for attacking my client and Dr. Ford. How did she make a credibility determination as to my client? How is she qualified to do that without ANY investigation? She did ZERO to determine whether my client and her witnesses were credible

Avenatti then kicked it up a notch by stating that Collins lacks the judgment to be a senator, which certainly seems to be the case after her announcement today. The attorney pointed out that Collins failed to meet with six different witnesses who support Swetnick’s claims.
.@SenatorCollins does not have the judgment to be a US Senator. She never met my client, never had her interviewed, never met the 6 witnesses supporting her declaration or had them interviewed, and never cross examined my client. And yet she made a credibility determination. How?

Avenatti ended his tweetstorm by cutting to the heart of the matter: Collins chose to attack sexual assault survivors everywhere by choosing to shame and publicly discredit Julie Swetnick. His harsh comments are exactly what she deserves.
.@SenatorCollins did not attack me, she attacked my client. A woman who came forward as a sexual assault victim. And she attacked Julie and “shamed her” without any facts and no investigation. This was a disgrace and a gut punch aimed at survivors everywhere.

Collins has proven herself unfit to lead and must be voted out of office in 2020.
