The president’s former confidant turned public detractor Omarosa Manigault made sure that Donald Trump started his week off on the wrong foot by releasing a fresh set of her secretly recorded tapes during this morning’s appearance on The View.
The audio paints a disturbing picture of a president who refuses to take his duties seriously, preferring to wander around the White House and interfere in the functions of government in search of the self-affirming attention that he craves so desperately.
Omarosa revealed to the assembled panel that “When Donald Trump got bored, which was very often because his attention span was very short, he would sometimes try to figure out what meetings were taking place in the White House and he would crash those meetings.”
The preface to her first tape is so distinctly on-brand for Trump that there can be no question about its authenticity. Omarosa recounted how the President crashed a meeting with the entire communications staff and the press shop that was supposed to be about messaging on tax reform and North Korea…and then in barged Trump:
“He came into the meeting, he sat down, and he starts rambling from topic to topic, none of it makes sense. And this is in October of last year, so this is … twelve months after the election, and he’s still talking about Hillary Clinton.”
The president derailed the meeting just so that he could tell them about how the real Russia story is about how Hillary Clinton colluded with Russia and paid $9 million for the “phony report” (referencing the Christopher Steele “pee tape” dossier).
When Sarah Huckabee Sanders gently corrected him and says it was closer to $6 million, Trump told her she was wrong and explained in a very telling excuse that they had hidden the total by “running it through a law firm.”
“That way, they can’t trace it. But they traced it. One thing in this business is they trace it. The reason a law firm is because this way you don’t have to give any papers. But they found out, it’s definitely illegal and it’s illegal from a campaign standpoint, from a campaign financing standpoint.”
Considering that this is almost exactly what Trump did to conceal his hush money payments to ex-mistresses Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, it’s clear that the issue was weighing heavily on his mind. After reassuring himself that everything was okay, he childishly demanded affirmation from the room:
“So the whole Russia thing, I think, seems to have turned around. What do you think, Sarah?” he asked.
“Absolutely,” said Huckabee Sanders, playing along with her boss.
Manigault’s new tapes show a frightening glimpse into just what the President does all day, and it’s clear that “running the country” is NOT part of it.
