Trump just launched a vicious personal attack on Watergate legend Carl Bernstein

The comparisons between Donald Trump and disgraced former President Richard Nixon will become more acutely accurate now that Trump has sent his latest tweet attacking Carl Bernstein, one of the legendary reporters who broke the Watergate story for The Washington Post.

The CNN report that Trump obliquely refers to was the story broken by Carl Bernstein, Jim Sciutto, and Marshall Cohen a few weeks ago that said Michael Cohen was ready to claim that Trump knew in advance about the infamous Trump Tower meeting between Russian agents and Trump campaign staff, including his son Donald Jr.

The initial source of the story was Cohen’s own lawyer Lannie Davis, who subsequently admitted that he had relayed the account without actually knowing if it was true or not. CNN, however, stands by its reporting, saying that it had multiple sources for the claim.

Trump’s delayed reaction to the story singled out Bernstein with a withering attack that an ambitious libel lawyer could have a field day with, impugning the veteran reporter’s honesty, accuracy, and reputation.

Trump’s increasingly deranged and desperate attacks on media outlets and reporters who report actual facts demonstrate the lengths to which he will not only deny reality but try to convince his base that the truth is a lie and that lies are the truth in order to cover up his administration’s massive level of criminality.

Judging from the comments on Trump’s Twitter feed not many people are buying his latest load of repugnant vitriol.

Luckily, when Special Counsel Robert Mueller finally releases his report, we’ll be able to find out for ourselves what Cohen does and doesn’t know about Trump’s advance knowledge of the Trump Tower meeting and collusion with the Russians. It just can’t happen soon enough.
