President Trump turned heads around the nation this morning when he ordered the flags at the White House be put back to full mast, barely two days after they had been lowered in honor of the passing of Senator John McCain.
The move is an obvious sign of disrespect towards McCain; to put it in perspective, President Obama had flags at half-mast for an entire week after Antonin Scalia died.
Veterans groups around the nation were quick to pick up on the insult, and the American Legion issued an unprecedented letter demanding that the White House follow the “long-established protocol” of honoring McCain with an official statement and lowering the flag back down.

Trump reportedly squashed plans to release an official presidential proclamation by White House staffers, instead preferring to send a self-aggrandizing tweet from his personal account that neglected to mention McCain’s military service.
My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!

It’s remarkable that the American Legion was forced to put out such a statement in an effort to shame the President into showing a basic modicum of decency for a dead man, and it’s yet another sign of just how low our president has sunk in his pathetic effort to get the last word in against his former rival.
