Per a new Texas Lyceum poll released today, the race between Senator Ted Cruz and his challenger, El Paso congressman Beto O’Rourke, is a statistical tie.

Cruz leads the poll 41 to 39, but with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.67 percent, either one could be ahead.

The poll is the closest one yet since O’Rourke entered the race last year. Since then, it has become the costliest race in Senate history. O’Rourke famously outraised the incumbent in the second quarter of 2018 with a staggering $10.4 million haul to Cruz’s $4 million. Overall, the young congressman from El Paso has raised $10 million more than Cruz.

Cruz’s pollster, Chris Wilson, criticized the polling methodology, claiming that Lyceum has a history of polling too many non-voters and too many Democrats. But Josh Blank, Lyceum Poll Research Director, duly struck back.

“O’Rourke continues to nip at Cruz’s heels, but it’s a long way to go until Election Day,” Blank explained. “If this race looks different than the rest, that’s probably because it is because a strong Democratic challenger raising prolific sums of money and tons of earned media.”

“Chris Wilson is an excellent campaign pollster and he’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing, which is to elect his candidate to office,” Blank told The Dallas Morning News. “The only difference between Chris and the Texas Lyceum is that he has an interest in who wins the race, and how it’s covered, the Texas Lyceum does not.”

While Beto continues to close the gap on Ted Cruz, America may finally see a Senator from Texas who represents people instead of the NRA.
