When he finally arrived at the emergency session, Trump blustered about and issued a vague but very ominous threat to the surrounding parties, warning that the United States would “do its own thing” if the assembled nations did not match their military spending levels to those that he requested – about 4% of their GDP.

Afterward, Trump held a press conference in which he proclaimed himself a “very stable genius,” repeated the lie that Pres. Reagan hadn’t won the state of Wisconsin, and announced that America would not be pulling out of NATO and that the rest of the alliance had agreed to his demands, which France’s Emmanuel Macron quickly made clear was absolute nonsense. 

While his baying fans will inevitably point to this as yet another of President Trump’s incredible victories that are making the United States respected again, his behavior is absolutely appalling by any reasonable standard – and the fact that this absurd display of masturbatory egotism was the best possible result that we could have hoped for tells you everything you need to know about the United States’ real standing in the world and what kind of a man we have representing us on the global stage.
