While many liberals are walking around like defeated zombies after the shock announcement of Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement earlier this week, Filmmaker Michael Moore is gearing up for a fight.
Thanks to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’s successful theft of President Obama’s supreme court pick back in 2016, President Trump now has a chance to nominate someone to replace Justice Kennedy who will tilt the court to the right for a generation or more.
If he’s successful, a woman’s right to choose, marriage equality and affirmative action are just some of the court-protected rights and policies that will be on the chopping block.
With Republicans holding a razor thin majority they can still push though just about anyone President Trump nominates . But all is not lost. Michael Moore appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and let it be known, he’s prepared to fight till the end fo block Trump’s Supreme Court take over attempt.
“I will stand there. Bill, let me tell you something. If this judge goes through, for at least the rest of our lives, it’s a right-wing court. That’s it. It’s over,” Moore told Bill Maher Friday night.
“The Senate right now is 50-49. Sadly, McCain will not be able to vote, so it’s a 50-49 vote,” he continued before arguing that Democrats have a shot to block a vote until after the mid-term elections in November. “And I don’t trust every Democrat,” he added.
To his point, Jennifer Rubin, a right wing columnist appearing with Moore, offered a different tactic for keeping Trump’s pick on the sidelines until the voters can have their say: Target centrist Republicans.
“Instead of circling the Capitol with a million people, take the million people to Maine and go to L.L. Bean and tell them in Maine, ‘You need to leave Maine unless Susan Collins votes the right way,’” she said, calling out the state’s moderate Republican senator who’s shown in the past that she’s willing to stand up to Trump.
“That’s how you play hardball. You do it smart. You go to Alaska, you say, ‘You know what, we’re gonna start boycotting Alaskan cruises until your senator votes Trump’s way,” she continued, referencing Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, another moderate Republican who’s proven she’s not afraid to buck her party and oppose the president on key votes.
Mitch McConnell argued in 2016 that he could not allow President Obama to fill the seat vacated by the recently deceased conservative Justice Antonin Scalia because the seat became open in an election year.
While no one expects a hypocrite like Sen. McConnell to be consistent with his principles, it will only take one Republican to hold him to his own standard and Trump’s pick could be dead in the water..
