As the investigation into the Donald J. Trump for President campaign and their connections to influential figures in the Russian Federation unfolds, it is becoming very clear that the American conservative establishment as a whole has intimate links to Russia’s ruling oligarchs – and they all participated in some form of collusion to influence the 2016 election in Donald Trump’s favor.
McClatchy DC is now reporting that “several prominent Russians, some in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle or high in the Russian Orthodox Church,” had dinner meetings in Moscow during the election with representatives from the National Rifle Association, the notorious gun lobby that is already under scrutiny for accepting donations from Russians and Russian Americans.
Russian banker and prominent NRA member Alexander Torshin is already the subject of a DOJ investigation for allegedly funneling illegal campaign donations from Russians to the Trump campaign.
The Russians named in the report include former deputy defense minister Dmitry Rogozin and Sergei Rudov, the head of the St. Basil the Great Charitable Foundation, which was founded by a close Putin ally.
The new revelations from McClatchy make it clear that Torshin is just one chess piece in a larger strategy by the Russian political establishment to infiltrate and exert influence over American politics, and it comes as no surprise that one of the biggest obstacles to progress in the United States is willfully complicit in the grander conspiracy to subvert our democracy and to entrench an extremist minority’s political control over our government.
The NRA spent a staggering $33.6 million on the 2016 election – and Special Counsel Mueller is likely to want to know where every cent came from after this news.
Sadly, there’s no reversing the damage that President Trump has wrought upon this country and the enormous suffering he’s inflicted on citizen and foreigner alike.
But if his inevitable fall takes down the despised coven of blood profiteers and domestic terrorists that strangle all efforts at passing commonsense gun reform legislation, why, that would be a wonderful silver lining indeed.
