The NRA just “supported” anti-gun violence campaign. A Parkland survivor’s response is epic

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is a domestic terrorist organization, plain and simple. In the same way that Donald Trump has so forcefully and successfully rebranded any news outlet which dares to question him as “fake news,” so too must we work to strip back the power of the NRA.

Friday, June 1st celebrates a multitude of causes – it is the first day of LGBTQ Pride month, so decreed by President Barack Obama, it’s national donut day, so decreed by Twitter, and it’s also National Gun Violence Awareness Day, so decreed by gun reform advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Born out of the 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in which heartbreakingly young children died in a mass shooting, Everytown created the #WeWearOrange social media promotion which encourages its supporters to wear orange and post to social media to bring awareness to the cause and help bring down the NRA.

The soulless drones at the NRA countered with this tweet, which will not be granted the satisfaction of an embed. The body of the tweet reads as follows:

“NRA SOCIAL GOING ORANGE: While Everytown for Gun Safety has devoted close to no resources to making citizens safer, the NRA continues to be the world’s leading gun safety organization since 1871. Send us pics in your orange hunting and NRA gear to be featured. #weareorange.”

The commentary could be described as laughable if the terrorist organization didn’t oversee the slaughter of countless school children since Columbine in 1999. They have continually halted attempts to regulate the manufacture and sale of firearms with their ever-expanding budget, even as the frequency of mass-shootings continues to increase.

Thankfully, sanity remains in some corners of this country. The survivors of the Valentine’s Day Massacre in Parkland, Florida have only grown stronger as the months have passed, and they proved that as they came down hard on the NRA’s gross smear campaign.

Cameron Kasky left no salt to spare with his rebuttal:

“This is the most depraved horseshit I’ve seen in my entire life,” the 17-year-old tweeted.

It’s a strong statement from a person who watched his faculty and classmates obliterated by a crazed gunman, but truly, what is more sadistic than an organization which watches these atrocities only to lean on the Constitution to justify someone’s right to do it again?

David Hogg, another prominent face to rise from the unspeakable horrors which befell his high school, trolled the organization instead:

“Hey @NRA thank you for your support of us!” he chides. “We must work together to promote sensible gun laws and behavioral intervention programs if we want to end this epidemic. #WeWearOrange”

Fred Guttenberg, a father who lost his daughter Jamie to the NRA’s propaganda machine, has posted about the movement frequently throughout Friday. He did offer one direct tweet to them, calling out the blatant lie in their tweet:

“@NRA, nice try but fail again,” Guttenberg writes, mocking them with one of Trump’s signature words. “One thing you are not about is gun safety,” he corrects them, before offering the warning, “If that ever was your mission, you failed and now we will handle it.”

Especially sickening about the NRA’s attempt to steal this viral campaign is the utter disregard for the lost life which predicated the #WearOrange movement. In 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed a week after performing at President Obama’s second inauguration.

The NRA does not care about children, nor do they care about the Bill of Rights or the Second Amendment. What they care about is profits and the kickbacks the “not-for-profit” organization receives from the gun lobby every year.

On a positive note, each individual mentioned in this article saw significantly more engagement on their tweet mocking the terrorists than the NRA did on their attempt to reclaim the color orange for gun-obsessed America.

David Hogg might just be right after all:
