Texas State Rep. Gene Wu, a Houston area Democrat, posted a tweet today in the wake of the murderous Santa Fe school shooting that at once speaks to his anger and frustration with the lawmakers in his state who have consistently refused to pass any sensible gun control laws, and acts as a call for action.

Wu is a progressive in a state that is dominated by conservatives.
Rep. Gene Wu, D-Houston, tweeted "Y'all been sending thoughts and prayers for two freaking decades now" following the mass shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, where at least eight people are dead. https://t.co/Jcinm5jFxu

Wu, a Chinese-American who has served in the legislature since 2013 has a D rating from the NRA, to his credit, but gets high grades from all of the top environmental groups.

It is a hopeful sign even on this day of death in Texas that there is a state lawmaker who wants to see laws passed that will really protect children and adults from gun violence, instead of just another official mouthing words that will lead nowhere.

Wu is also calling for a ban on assault rifles.
We are fortunate that the #SantaFe shooter did not use a semi-automatic assault rifle with high-capacity magazines. The death toll would have been significantly higher.
This is a depressing statement.

The bottom line for Wu is that it is time to see this gun violence as not normal.
The death toll at #SantaFe is currently 10.
9 students
1 teacher
This is not acceptable. This is not normal.

It is hard to believe the current Republican-dominated, NRA loving Texas legislature will do anything significant, but if in the coming election more people are elected who think like Wu, even Texas can bring light from this darkness.
