A shady billionaire just gave Paul Ryan his reward for passing tax bill in secret backroom meeting

A common criticism of the Republican Party is that they are nothing more than a band of corporate stooges, selling themselves out to big lobbies for kickbacks and campaign donations. Often we forget just how true that criticism truly is.

When they voted to pass their toxic tax legislation, funneling massive amounts of wealth to the super-rich, they disingenuously sold the move as an effort to give tax breaks to the middle class. Today revealed what their real objective was, and how well they accomplished it.

Politico revealed that Sheldon Adelson, the cryptkeeper donor who has been funneling donations from his casino empire to the GOP since nigh the dawn of time recently shelled out $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a sinister super PAC aligned with Republican House leadership.

The massive donation was the result of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) flying to Las Vegas to convene Adelson, who argued that a large influx of cash might allow Republicans to push back the predicted blue wave and maintain control of the House.

Law dictates that Ryan himself can’t ask for seven-figure, he momentarily left the room and a proxy, Norm Coleman, chair of the Republican Jewish Committee, asked Adelson for the money. Politico points out that the $30 million is three times larger than the amount he gave in 2016.

Why, one might ask, does Adelson care so much about Republican control of the government? Surely, the colossal amount of money he has donated and continues to donate must be worth less than whatever he receives in return?

Well, as Steven Dennis of Bloomberg points out, that is far from the case. In fact, the $10 million Adelson gave in 2016 paid off huge for him, as his company received a $670,000 million dollar tax break from the GOP bill, an almost unthinkable return on investment.

Men like Adelson continue to pump our government full of toxic politicians and even more toxic politics for the simple reason that it makes them massive amounts of money. The corruption is right there for all to see. A vote for a Republican is a gift-wrapped present to billionaires who don’t need any more help. Instead, we must elect Democrats who will focus more on the middle-class and less on aiding ghouls like Adelson amass larger piles of cash.
