Trump just threatened to take away media credentials as scandals engulf his presidency

President Trump took to Twitter this morning to issue a disturbing threat to our nation’s free press, warning that he is considering taking away press credentials from news outlets that refuse to slavishly worship him and dare to print unflattering news about the president and his interminable scandals.

The president cited a “study” by the right-wing Media Research Center, which tries to force a connection between the president’s slightly improved approval rating and the 91% of negative coverage of the President’s actions since the beginning of the year by mainstream media outlets.

Of course, there’s been good reason for the 91% negative coverage.

In between the endless White House scandals involving porn stars, Playboy Playmates, domestic abusers, shameless grifter paranoiacs and career alcoholics on top of the slow but steady progress of Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into the allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with foreign agents to influence the 2016 election, the President and his administration has been advancing an agenda so cartoonishly evil that it boggles the mind to behold.

Over the past year, the Trump administration has committed one of the largest acts of class warfare ever seen in modern history with the tax bill, attempted to strip healthcare away from tens of millions of people on three separate occasions, has been tearing immigrant children away from their families before sending them to concentration camps, launched two useless and appallingly expensive missile strikes on Syria, killed 6,000 innocent civilians in his reckless war against ISIS, lifted the limits on toxic pollution… the list goes on and on.

And that’s not even taking into account all of the petty feuds and fights that the president has engaged in over the past year, like insulting and attacking the widow of a Green Beret who was killed on his watch and making crude innuendos about Senator Kristen Gillibrand, or the fact that he’s spent the majority of his presidency on a golf course.

Suffice to say, there’s good reason why all the coverage of the President has been negative. For him to actually yank press credentials would open a can of worms that the notoriously lazy president might not want to deal with – but it’s clear that his authoritarian inclinations are growing stronger and stronger as he grows more comfortable in his office.

Our free press is one of the cornerstone of our democracies, and while it is no stranger to controversy and certainly has issues that need to be addressed, none of the failings of corporate media can take away from the incredible journalism that thousands of determined Americans do every day, shining a light on the uncomfortable truths about the bleak hellscape we have constructed for ourselves.

We must fight to defend our free press with every ounce of energy we possess from the machinations of grotesque despots and the pernicious billionaires propping them up.
