Yesterday, Trump opted to disregard the clearly damaging optics and play golf on the very day of the memorial service of former First Lady Barbara Bush at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. The move was followed today by yet another misstep that put his glaring lack of compassion on full display.
This morning, the massive American flag on the 80-foot flagpole at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump is currently staying, was not flying at half staff, despite the fact that flags at all federal buildings were lowered in honor of the late Mrs. Bush, who died Tuesday at the age of 92.
While Mar-a-Lago is neither a federal building nor government owned, the president has billed the private resort as both the “Winter White House” and the “Southern White House” and has hosted a slew of world leaders and foreign dignitaries there for official state business. If he is going to continue profiting off of the private resort as president – in clear violation of the Constitution – the least he could do is convey at least a modicum of respect at the property amid the passing of a former First Lady of the United States.
Only after widespread and swift backlash on social media did White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirm that flags were ultimately lowered to half-staff at both Mar-a-Lago and Trump International Golf Club.
Sarah Sanders tells pool flags have now been lowered at half-staff both at private Mar-a-Lago and Trump International Golf Club to honor Barbara Bush, after reporters noticed they were not lowered after Trump directive last night to do so on federal buildings.

The fact that the President of the United States had to be guilted into lowering the flags at the very property at which he insists on conducting government business after the passing of Mrs. Bush speaks volumes about his dangerous lack of compassion and thoughtfulness when it comes to anything other than his own bottom line.
