This morning, President Trump lashed out at fired FBI director James Comey over the revelations in his new book, going on a wild and insulting Twitter rant that turned heads around the nation.

Trump accused Comey of a litany of crimes, like being a “LEAKER and a LIAR,” of lying to Congress under oath, for mishandling classified information, and for showing favoritism in the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email server.

The tweets are part of a larger campaign by Trump and the Republican Party to discredit and publicly disparage James Comey, in the desperate hope that tarnishing the public’s trust in Comey and his associates might somehow derail or discredit Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into the Trump-Russia alleged collusion scandal.

But the President’s own actions take the teeth out of his wild accusations. Last night, it was announced out of the blue that President Trump would be pardoning Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the former Chief of Staff to ex-Vice President and fugitive war criminal Dick Cheney who was convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury for leaking the identity of CIA intelligence officer Valerie Plame.

Why he chose to do so is unclear; perhaps it was a favor for his new National Security Advisor, John Bolton, who served with Libby in the Bush administration, or perhaps it was to set a precedent of excusing perjury and obstruction of justice – two crimes that the President himself will almost certainly be charged with at some point in the near future.

But to pardon a leaker who put lives at risk and to then turn around and accuse Comey of being a leaker is a ridiculous show of flagrant hypocrisy, even by Trump’s standards, which CNN host Jake Tapper was quick to take him to task for:

While only time will tell how this all plays out, the obvious desperation and panic leaking from the White House indicates that the walls are closing in on President Trump and his cronies – and the madness is only just beginning.
