With tens of thousands of people taking part in today’s March For Our Lives protest to call for immediate action on gun regulation reform, former President Barack Obama took to Twitter to offer words of encouragement, support, and, dare we say it, hope.

With the Obama’s urging them on, the marchers are sure to appreciate the level of support they are getting not just from progressive politicians and celebrities, but also the millions of ordinary people around the world who are equally inspired by the dedication and motivation of the organizers of the March For Our Lives.

People power is a slogan used many times before when a situation becomes so untenable that large masses of citizens rise up simultaneously to make their voices heard. It was seen in eastern Europe when people of countries trapped in the orbit of the Soviet Union rose up against a totalitarian system. It was seen in the civil rights and anti-war movements in the United States in the 60’s.

President Obama is right to see the March For Our Lives in the same light as those momentous social movements, but the key phrase in his tweet is “keep at it.” Unless the public pressure is continuously applied, the gaping wound of gun violence will continue to spill blood upon the floors of our schools, churches, concert venues, and any other places that people gather and are vulnerable to mass shootings.

If we only had a leader in the White House right now who understood that the needs of the majority of the citizens in this country outweigh the selfish desires of gun manufacturers, the NRA, and the politicians who kowtow to them. Obama’s tweet reminds us that we once had a leader like that, and hopefully, if all the marchers today get out and vote in November, we will have another one soon.
