Earlier this week another Republican demonstrated the GOP’s guiding axiom in the era of Trump: there is no bottom. Just when it seems like their rhetoric can’t get any cruder or crueler, a member of their party steps forward with a hitherto unimagined depravity.
Republican Leslie Gibson, a candidate for Maine’s House of Representatives, took to Twitter to launch a bigoted attack on Emma Gonzalez, the brave outspoken survivor of the horrific Parkland mass shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people, including some of her fellow classmates.
Gonzalez has seized the national spotlight as an advocate for immediate, meaningful gun reform. Not surprisingly, this has made her a target for the swarming masses of gun fetishists and NRA lapdogs that populate the Republican Party.

“There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you’re frothing at the mouth moonbat,” Gibson tweeted. Not surprisingly, the tweet was met with harsh condemnation and the cowardly candidate quickly deleted it.
It’s worth noting that Gibson does not know Gonzalez’s sexuality and is making presumptions based on her appearance. It must also be said that her orientation — whatever it may be — has no bearing on the gun debate.
In response to the backlash, Gibson offered a tepid explanation without an apology.
“Because of this. I am very passionate about protecting our constitutional rights from those who seek their elimination. It was not appropriate to single out the Parkland students, but I stand firm in my defense of our constitutional rights,” he said.
Today, Gibson was forced to finally grapple with the full ramifications of his ill-intentioned tweet. He announced he would be withdrawing from his House race, reports The Sun Journal. The hatemonger has been forced to slink off with his tail between his legs, but even now refuses to admit he was wrong.
“Because of this. I am very passionate about protecting our constitutional rights from those who seek their elimination. It was not appropriate to single out the Parkland students, but I stand firm in my defense of our constitutional rights,” Gibson said.
The Sun Journal adds that Gibson was heading for an easy victory in the district because he was running unopposed before making the disturbing tweet. This splendid act of self-sabotage will certainly prove to be to a benefit to the people of Maine because now they won’t be saddled with this detestable man representing them.
