In the lead up to the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow, Trump was reportedly “so eager” to have the Russian President attend that he wrote a personal letter inviting him to the event.

At the bottom of the typed letter, Trump scrawled a postscript adding that he looked forward to seeing “beautiful” women during his trip.
Trump’s letter to Putin, which was described by people with knowledge of its contents, shows how interested he was in attracting the personal attention of the Russian president. The real estate magnate, who owned the Miss Universe pageant, wrote the note at a time when he was looking to expand his brand to Russia.
Thus far, this is Trump’s first known attempt to have contacted Putin. The letter has already been turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is in charge of overseeing the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
It remains to be seen whether Putin ever received the letter, or – if so – whether or not he wrote back.

Trump’s attorney’s response on the development was decidedly flippant. “It’s all nonsense,” he said, despite claiming that he is “not familiar with the letter.” How he could be both unfamiliar, but also certain that it’s “nonsense” is, nonetheless, impressive.

This is not the first instance in which Trump has been vocal in his desire to meet with Putin at the Miss universe pageant in Moscow.

Do you think Putin will be going to The Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow – if so, will he become my new best friend?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 19, 2013
While Putin was slated to attend, he canceled his appearance at the last minute.
Per The Washinton Post, “Investigators for special counsel Robert S. Mueller III have asked witnesses questions about the Miss Universe pageant and Trump’s interest in having Putin attend the event, according to people familiar with the inquiry.”
Trump’s sloppy attempts to downplay his infatuation with Putin, who meddled on his behalf to install him as President have only resulted in humiliating failures. And with Mueller closing in, developments like these will only hurt a flailing Trump.
