The DNC’s rules and bylaws committee is discussing a proposal to do away with superdelegates, after a recommendation from the Unity Reform Commission created in the wake of the fight between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton during the 2016 primaries.

The Unity commission had recommended limiting the effect of this shameful blight on representative democracy by 60%, but it looks like the guilt is starting to eat away at the DNC from the inside. The committee is considering eliminating them entirely.

The sham that is superdelegates has hamstrung the democratic process, with no example more egregious than what we saw play out in the 2016 primaries. Superdelegates are not bound by obligation to vote along with their state’s election results. They can cast a vote for whoever they want in a primary, regardless of which candidate their constituents chose.

This small abnormality in the Democrat’s voting process has metastasized into a cancer on the party’s claim on true honest democracy.

If the committee can agree, which it absolutely should in order to regain the trust of its base, the proposal would come up for a vote at the next meeting this Summer or Fall.

Here’s hoping this awakening to reason will right the wrongs of the last election.
